This was an interesting article I found in The Omaha World Herald, thought I would share it with you. This article was written by Roger Buddenburg

“President Obama was in Minneapolis on Saturday for a campaign style rally, “full-court press” he has promised over the next month to get congress to pass a healthcare overhaul. He is furthering a national conversation that, during a summer full of town hall meetings and complicated debates, has become loaded with jargon. If you tuned in late, or need a brush up, here is a quick guide to the words the policy makers are tossing around.

“Individual Mandate”

The idea that every American should be required to get health insurance. Similar to how most states require a driver to get auto insurance.

“Public Option”

The catch phrase for government run health insurance of some kind.

“Trigger”

A suggested alternative to the public option.

“Tort Reform”

In legal talk, a tort is a harmful wrongdoing that the wrongdoer can be sued for damages. In healthcare reform this means malpractice lawsuits. Doctors say these are outrageously costly and need reform, otherwise the practice of “defensive medicine” the ordering of unnecessary tests for fear of being sued will increase.

“Co-Ops”

Alternative to the public option. These cooperatives would be nonprofit insurance plans, which could be set up by the government but would be owned and run by their citizen members.

“Doughnut Hole”

Partly covers drug costs up to a certain level each year. After that, you must pay a certain amount of your own money before the plan’s drug coverage kicks in.

“Single-Payer System”

An approach for financing in which one public entity pays all the doctors, hospitals and other providers.

“Socialized Medicine”

It’s a system in which all the health personal and facilities, doctors, nurses, hospitals, everybody, work for the government, drawing a government salary. Example: U.S. Veterans Administration

“Rescission”

Insurance companies decision to cancel your coverage whenever they feel its necessary. Example: You hide a pre existing condition, cannot afford to pay, or become cancelled because the insured is not a good source of revenue for the company.

“Pre Existing Condition”

Medical issues that the insurance company refuses to pay because the medical issue in question had happened prior to the start date of the policy.”

The More You Know!

I am a resident of Omaha Nebraska. I am just one of the millions of Americans that needs healthcare coverage. The Senator of my state is trying to confuse the people of Nebraska by putting out ads making it seem like he is FOR healthcare reform. He is lying. He believes the healthcare industry needs some types of reform, but not one that offers a single payer option. He says he wants to put Nebraska first.
Here is why he is doing just the opposite…

A new report says nearly 30 percent of Nebraskans under the age of 65 that had no insurance at some point over the years 2007 and 2008. The report also says more than 84 percent of those who went without coverage for 2007 and 2008 were members of working families. – Based on data from the Census Bureau

“Despite attacks accusing Senator Ben Nelson of opposing health insurance reforms, Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson says he still favors a policy that changes certain provisions in coverage, like allowing pre-existing conditions. Senator Nelson says he will never support a full government-run health insurance program.” –From BenNelson.senate.gov website

Here is why…

Sen. Nelson has received $1,195,299 from insurance interests, $399,345 from health professionals, $258,483 from the pharmaceutical industry, and $195,138 from hospital and nursing home interests.

He was chief executive officer of an insurance company and has sided with and received political support from business groups opposed to a public health plan as part of health reform.

According to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, Sen. Nelson has raised more than $2 million from insurance and health care interests in his three campaigns for federal office.

His lifetime campaign contributions from the insurance industry rank him fourth in the Senate, but only behind three others who have run for president (Sen. McCain, Kerry, and Dodd).

Other top donors of Ben Nelson include whose’s who of health industry interests:

Eli Lilly & Co – $ 27,250

UnitedHealth Group Inc. – $ 25,000

American Optometry Association $ 25,000

Schering-Plough Corp. – $ 24,500

American Medical Association – $ 24,250

Amgen Inc – $ 24,250

Pfizer Inc – $ 22,600

American Dental Association – $ 22,000

American Physical Therapy Association – $ 21,250

American Health Care Association – $12,285

American Hospital Association – $ 20,000

Information provided by CampaignMoney.org

“These negative comments about the best way to bring about comprehensive health reform, and his parroting the insurance lobby’s line, should come as no surprise given Sen. Nelson’s background, his campaign fundraising, and his other connections to the insurance industry.
Before entering politics, Ben Nelson spent his career as an insurance executive, insurance company lawyer and, early in his career, Nebraska’s state insurance regulator.

Oh, I understand now Ben.
That’s why you don’t support real reform.

“With fists pounding on exterior windows like a street mob out of a 1930s newsreel, a crowd of right-wing agitators against health insurance reform descended on a town hall meeting in Tampa, Florida, “banging on windows” until police and organizers were forced to END the event. The result? A violent mob silenced the voices of each and every American desperate to find a way out of the endless cycle of fear, shame and family bankruptcy brought on by an inhumane, profit-driven health insurance market. Moreover, by using violence to shut down civic discussion between neighbors, this right-wing horde trampled underfoot one of the most sacred and historic symbols of American democracy.” Said Jeffrey Feldmen from the Hunnington Post.

The mob made it so no one could speak… the freedom to speak has been silenced.

These town hall meetings have turned into riots. People have been hurt. I have strong opinions about polices and reform;
But to the crazy people who are stopping town hall meetings because of their protests, you are stopping productive concerns.

Here are quotes from town hall meetings on healthcare-

“Obama lies, grandma dies.” one sign reads,
Protesters screaming,!!Death panels! “Obama will pull the plug on grandma, cause she cant afford to pay!” WTF? Dr. Kavorkian is working again?! It’s not TRUE at all; not one word in the claim, but it is convenient, for the interests of anti healthcare reform.
60 plus pretends to be an advocacy group for seniors with concerns about healthcare. But it is definitely not that at all. It’s a Corp. Interest Group, funded by the insurance companies and prescription companies. Their slogan, “Are you worth the costs”. These people are telling seniors, the government is trying to kill them! Anti-Healthcare reform has become a multi million dollar industry. How many heads can we get to believe our lies, your head is now worth $100.00.

My own mind is worth far more to me, how about you….

Sarah Pailin said it a couple days ago (Obamas death panel), now the protesters are screaming it from the tops of their lungs. Go figure. Baaahhh. (That’s my sheep sound)
The freedom of speech entitles us to make our own opinion known. But is it your opinion if it comes from someone else, oh and it’s a lie? It would be one thing if even half of what she said was true, but its not. Its PROPAGANDA.
Didn’t her dumb ass resign because she “couldn’t commit herself to the state of Alaska”? She isn’t even a governor anymore.

“There is not one word in the healthcare bill that would spend any amount of money on abortions” Claire McKaskel, representative from Missouri stated, yet protesters signs still say Obama’s healthcare=aborition.

There were racial slurs on protesters signs like: swastikas, “go back to Kenya” and
“Maybe obamacare will work for Kenya, not for the US” If you have to question if your President is from the United States, in my opinion, you are anti-American.
When in the history of the USA have we ever accused the president of not being American enough? I can only assume if you really, really believe this, you are racist.

That is hate, not a debate. I love the fact I can speak my mind without a nazi regime on my ass, but there is a fine line between speaking your mind and being sheep to made up propaganda. My opinion is of my own mind, I have questions about reform, some have been addressed and some haven’t. But the louder you talk, the less you hear. I want to understand, not undermine my country

There is nothing stopping health care companies from charging $4,000 for a MRI, but there needs to be. WE NEEDTO KEEP HEALTH CARE HONEST, NOT PROFITABLE.
Today America has the most expensive health system in the world, but we are not the most healthy, we rank 27th, with Canada and UK ranking far higher than the US.

The most expensive thing aside from payroll a small business owner will have to pay for is insurance for his employees. The most afforadable plan most small business owners can find is $400.00 per month per employee. That includes full coverage for the employee only. For a family plan it can cost the owner of a company $800.00 per month. Assuming the family is young and in good health, but if not it can go into the thousands.
Even if a small business owner pays a extra $1,000 dollars a year in taxes, at least his employees can be covered by a federal insurance plan and he wont have to worry about spending $9,600 for the year. Saving money is key to business, they can hire more employees at better wages, make more capitol, and intern become very successful. It’s the American dream.

This exert is from the New York Times:
“Health insurance is supposed to offer protection — both medically and financially. But as it turns out, estimated three-quarters of people who are pushed into personal bankruptcy by medical problems actually had insurance when they got sick or were injured.
Too many other people already have coverage so meager that a medical crisis means financial calamity.
One of them is Lawrence Yurdin, a 64-year-old computer security specialist. Although the brochure on his Aetna policy seemed to indicate it covered up to $150,000 a year in hospital care, the fine print excluded nearly all of the treatment he received at an Austin, Tex., hospital.
He and his wife, Claire, filed for bankruptcy last December, as his unpaid medical bills approached $200,000.”

In every bill proposed there are flaws. It is the job of both parties is to refine bills, when one party says they won’t partake in even expressing ideas, the way our country is run crumbles. Maybe they are making too much money working WITH the insurance company instead of working for you (that’s sad cause elected officials have been elected by you for you) I guess there is nothing saying that the systems instilled by our forefathers will last forever, for every empire there is, dozens have fallen before.

“I have a itch I need to scratch, but cant because it costs too much for rash medication.” Janel-

Well people,

It is time for healthcare reform that is good for everyone. Lets talk about that…

Here is my personal story with healthcare.

When I was 17 I moved out on my own. Its 10 years later and I still have not been able to afford healthcare…ever.
When I was 22 I looked into getting health insurance, I called many insurance companies and my best; out of pocket price I could get was 287.00 per month. That was blue cross and blue shield.

They said it was so high because I was in birthing age. Um, I have been in birthing age since I was 12 and I will be till I hit menopause. That’s the reason it’s so expensive for me to get healthcare! WTF.

I also talked to another insurance company that tried to pawn me off on something called a health savings account (hsa).
What this policy intails:

You pay up to your co pay that is 2,000.00, then after that, you are covered. That means that whatever you to go to the doctor, you pay out of pocket! Last time I went to the doctor I spent 90.00 out of pocket. That means I would have to go to the doctor 23 times before my hsa would pay a dime!! You got to be kidding me; I go to the doctor maybe 2 or 3 times a year!

My family has a history of thyroid problems, I am almost positive I do also. One time I went to the urgent health clinic (see that’s where people without insurance go) for breathing issues, I told her (the doctor) about my family history of thyroid conditions, and how I was experiencing the same issues. I had an enlarged goiter on my neck, dry skin and weight fluctuation. All indicators of a thyroid condition.

She told me that a thyroid test would run me $800.00 out of pocket and cost me 90.00 per 3 months for medications and it would be necessary for me to get additional tests every 6 months for this condition.

And in addition, if they did diagnose me with the condition, in the future, if I did get insurance, the company wouldn’t cover my thyroid. This would be considered a PRE EXISTING CONDITION.

Needless to say I never got my thyroid under control and still bout with many issues because of it. Why is that fair?
But I was diagnosed with asthma that same day, sweet!

So health care reform isn’t good for the people? Tell me why.
I will tell you otherwise.

The reform will FORCE insurance companies to keep costs low on prescriptions,

Last time I purchased imtrex, my migraine medication, I paid $103.00 out of pocket for 9 pills. It would be nice to have competitive pricing on meds. My grandmother who lives in Arizona, travels down to Mexico two times a year to get her heart medication, thyroid medication and other expensive meds. It costs her 1/3 the price she would pay at Walgreen’s for the EXACT same medication, I swear there is even a Pfizer brand label on it!! Lets recap; a old woman will drive 4 hours to Mexico, go to ElWalgreenos and pays 1/3rd the price for medications then what she would pay in her own country. Seems a bit messed up.

It will keep costs on needed medical testing low, like thyroid tests and cholesterol tests

It will keep the monthly cost of insurance lower by creating a medium.

That means that a new insurance company comes to town with lower insurance costs, there for forcing other companies to fight for business by having to lower their costs so they can compete with the new kid intown. Except the new kid is a national healthcare company.

No one can be denied for pre existing conditions, and omg, here is the kicker, I CAN BECOME INSURED! For the first time in my working adult life I might have a chance to become an insured individual.

Hello fellow bloggers and blog readers!

My name is Janel.

I live in Omaha Nebraska.

And no, I don’t farm corn or raise cattle, I just live here.

I am a 27-year-old dance teacher who has poor spelling. Chocolate and politics are my two true loves in life, but never together, as it upsets my stomach.

My blogs are about political issues that I sometimes take very seriously. Maybe too seriously, as I am a natural debater. What can I say, it’s a gift!

I am looking to start a dialog with friends, foes, family, strangers and anyone who is willing to express their opinion. Sometimes I use my political frustration to choreograph and other times to blog. Hope you enjoy my blogs as much as I enjoy writing them!
